SF6, Sulfur Hexafluoride
Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) is an inorganic, colorless, odorless, and non-flammable gas. SF6 primary use is in the electrical industry as a gaseous dielectric medium for various voltage circuit breakers, switchgear and other electrical equip, ment, often replacing oil filled circuit breakers (OCBs) that can contain harmful PCBs. SF6 gas under pressure is used as an insulator in gas insulated switchgear (GIS) because it has a much higher dielectric strength than oir or dry nitrogen. This property makes it possible to significantyly reduce the size of the electrical gear.
Safety Requirements: The cryogenic liquid will rapidly boil to the gas at standard temperatures and pressures. The liquidfied gas can cause frostbite to any contaminated tissue. The main health hazard associated with release of this gas is asphyxiation by displacement of oxygen (see MSDS for further information).
